BUSH DIARY JULY 1991:

Saw a white rainbow today, well more of a fog bow.  It was foggy out, sun just shining right on some ground fog and there it was a distinct white rainbow with a bit of yellow on the sides.  Judy says she has never seen one.  It took a picture of it and yep it's there it is not an optical illusion.

Fourth of July is a BIG deal up here.  Judy and I went to watch the parade which consisted of any moving vehicle with lights and siren, color guard, a couple of floats and lots of candy thrown into the crowd.  There were lots of foot races and three legged races for all ages.  There was spiffy grandma's race (Akka) 50 yards, winner gets a cash prize. They were pretty spritely.  The Search and Rescue Lear jet and helicopter buzzed the beach, I thought they were close enough to identify faces. Ack!

Also we went to the Fire works on the beach.  Everyone parks their truck or what ever in a large circle on the beach KBRW hosts the fireworks and yells at the kids to stay back. The wind was blowing pretty hard and the fireworks were mostly right to left depending on the wind.  Then home.

July 11, 1991:  Dang missed the total eclipse of the sun best seen in Hawaii.

And it snowed vigorously down town for a few minutes.

I plan on going to lower 48 later on in the year, it is much easier to leave Barrow weather wise in the colder months.  The worst months are when there is open water.  Makes fog you know.

I made chocolate mayonnaise cake and took it to work. big hit!
I will probably be attending a birth certificate workshop in Anchorage later this year.

One of the villages served by the North Slope Borough is Anaktuvuk Pass.  Let me translate.  The porcupine herd of caribou travel by the village and leave thousands and thousands of dropping.  Anak is poop, and tuvak is caribou.  Thus Anaktuvuk Pass.

Here in Barrow was also have Anak Lagoon.  I shall let you do the translation.

I had lunch at Arctic Pizza.  They make a decent pizza.  They have an upstairs and they do not let children go up there, thank you noise abatement police.

Fran Tate the owner of Pepe's North of the Border sponsors a Polar Bear Dunk, a couple of docs and their very good friends participated. water temp is about 30 degrees.

Last week KBRW broadcast two days of the first Elder's Conference. This consisted of long speeches.  At one point, one of the native ladies in the department started giggling.  We asked her to translate.

The woman speaker was talking about how one time the husband came home from a hunting trip and asked for something to clean up with.  The wife was busy in another room and told him there was something to use under the sink.

So he rummaged around under the sink, ran some water and pretty soon he came into he room where his wife was and asked, "Well, am I clean enough?".
She asked him, "What did you use? You smell funny."
The husband got the container he had used  and he said, "Here it is, it's for men and I am a man."
He was holding a spray can of Mr. Clean.

That's it for July 1991.
