BUSH DIARY MARCH 1995

BUSH DIARY MARCH 1995:

March 1:  Blizzard all day long, got to 1 above.  Taxi's all ran but a bit slow, snow y/know.  Mayor did not call is a snow day but 50 employees did not make it to work at the schools. I only know this because Monica's husband has been hired as a crossing guard at Ipalook.  Most of the kids run down the street to avoid him. It's a kid thing. He makes 17 bucks an hour.

I finally got Trauma Registry all caught up and mailed, am now current for the first time since Judy retired.  Now all I have to do is (Courtesy of Little Women) Walk fast, frown and rattle something importantly.

Kitty Diagnosis:  Heard from the Vet what is wrong with Bradford. He has hyperthyroidism. The Vet mentioned that Pullman has a treatment for that particular feline diagnosis.  Yikes.

Stuck at home today:  Blizzard continues.  No buses or taxis are running.  Phones jammed from people calling in.  I finally got a taxi about 10 am. The Mayor called it a weather day for NSB personnel for the rest of the day. Plows out plowing snow. I usually go back in on Friday nights to do back up, didn't want to take a chance on iffy transport.  Went in Saturday.

The Iditarod started from Wasilla.  I watched part of the start.  What a race. I can that I have at least been at the start and end of the Iditarod
.
IRS WANTS MONEY:  Got a nasty gram from Unca Sam.  They want $308.00 for 1992 taxes.  I looked over my return and my accountant did not declare the Permanent Fund Dividend check.  I shall mail a check to the Federales and fire my accoutant.  She has done Judy's taxes often enough to recognize the PFD.  Take that!

Kitty Health: Tim got alarming report from Vet.  Bradfords liver enzymes were 800, normal is 90.  He now gets a thyroid pill twice a day. He gets the pill covered in cream cheese.  He does like that. Will get a blood test in a week to see if the thyroid med is helping.

March 11.  Another lovely weekend in Barrow.  It is only minus 17. so we bundled up and took a taxi to Pepe's for breakfast and then shopping at AC.  The usual.

I got a card returned from Maryann Hosier.  I wrote her a limerick by Isaac Asimov teasing her about working on the crab factory it reads:

There once was a girl from Decatur
Who went to sea in a freighter
She was had by the master, a total disaster
But the crew all made up for it later.

Update on Lita:  Jeanne told me that Lita's sister-in-law told her that Lita was in the hospital with hepatitis.  Well that is creative.

Monica told me that Guy had returned from a trip to Colorado to visit his sister and to see a counselor who has diagnosed him to have bipolar disorder.  Ugh.  He is being noncompliant with meds and angry.  Not good.

Monica is going to Anchorage for birth certificate workshop.  She hopes the husband decides to leave and not trash the apartment and notes that he certainly had not been like this in Minnesotta. She took Tasha with her to Anchorage. Worry. Worry.

Dreamt I was in a tall building and there was an earthquake.  Lovely.  Some emotional disturbance of mine no doubt.  Meh.

Fire in the hole:  We had a genuine fire at the hospital March 23rd.  It happened about 2:09 pm this afternoon.  The dryer in the laundry room caught fire.  The alarm went off and clanged incessantly for about 20 minutes.  Everyone but the Mayor came to help put it out. The head housekeeper was laughing at the hospital administrator, John Morrow, who came running in with a fire extinguisher and started spraying away on the closed laundry door. It splattered everywhere. Open! Open! Open! Giggle, giggle, giggle.  The Safety Officer theorized that the mop head dried to the point that the outer bits were dry enough to burn but the water sensors still detected the wettish mop head and did not shut off the dryers.  And the other part is our evacuation routine during fire alarm. The medical record folk load up all of the metal cabinets that hold 5 x 7 file cards listing all of the patient names by alphabet and taking the cart past the lobby into the lobby of the health department.  The inpatient records get gathered up and put in the fridge at the nures station.  The plan for actual patient removal is to transfer people to any available building via walking, taxi what ever works.

Got in the computer parts that I had been expecting from area and went in Friday night to swap out bits and pieces.  Nuthin.   Tried quite a bit of physical force.  Nope.  Called Marie Caruso and we performed several procedures and putting it all back in the shell did not work.  No computer! Disaster!  I asked Marie to get new boards to Monica and have her bring them back with her.

Monica called me about 4:30 pm Saturday she would pick me up in an hour and we would go play with computer guts. Nothing worked.  Tried everything.  Marie is coming to Barrow tomorrow.  Thank you computer gods!!

Marh 28.  Marie came, swapped boards and hard discs and it turned out that we had a hard disc failure.

Exit south:  Monica's husband left Monday for Minnesotta. She will be going to Hawaii  to work on dissolution papers.  She has changed bank accounts.  Eesh.  ooh, have a Mait Tai for me.

March 30. Schlepped five birth certificates to the courthouse.  Still waiting for affidavit of paternity on one.  Of interest, Alaska has a THREE part affidavit of paternity.  One part is for the mother, one part is for the father and one part is for the HUSBAND.

Kitty health:  Bradfords liver enzymes have dropped back down to 100.  Vet says Bradford cannot take this med long term and suggested radioactive treatment in Seattle. Sheesh.  What next?

And that is the end of the drama in Barrow for March.  G'night folks.
