BUSH DIARY MARCH 1994

BUSH DIARY:

March 1: Judy is back from Anchorage and things are back to what passes for normal at good old US PHS Alaska Native Hospital. Marie Caruso departed after having installed or new to us computer given to us from Bethel.  Yayyyyy! Everything was okay except I had go around resetting the baud rates to 9600 on the Wyse keyboards. The pharmacy folk are very happy to have the computer up and running and we still have room to add 7 or 8 ports.  It is good to be able to expand. We are hooked up to X.25 telecommunications which means that the registration and PCC files will be able to be taken off the system much more quickly.

One of the nurses came in to complain that the computer kept repeating over and over, okay to reboot?  Sure. Hey, it's still doing it!  So I went down there and saw the problem.  Someone had left a pile of charts sitting to close to the return key on the keyboard, moved the charts, pointed out the future solution, bowed before anyone had time to be embarrassed.

Malicious wounding:  It was in the Anchorage paper. A native woman was arrested for chewing off of most of her boyfriends wand of love.  Pretty sure it was alcohol related.

March 5:  Our one year anniversary. We are very compatible. We got up very early this morning 6 am to go have breakfast at Pepe's.  I like the Belgian Waffles, he liked the veggie omelet.  Breakfast runs about 35 dollars. (Toms' Cabin in Emmett serves breakfast for about 5 bucks per head..sigh.)

Friday: big meeting in commons.  ASNA CEO talked about the 648 contract.  Carolyn McClintock, administrator asked that all rumors be routed to her so she could post them and say if they are true or not.  That should help the jitters.  This discussion prompted Judy to decide to retire this year, dammit! During all of this I learned a weird sort of cultural thing.  Every once in a while someone will get introduced on the radio and amongst the introduction is their recitation of the jobs they held, the more jobs the better.  It is very unusual for one of the native ladies to keep their job for more than two years.  We have some record setters, thank God.  Numerous jobs is a high status thing.

NOSE BLEED WATER BILL: Carolyn announced at the monthly meeting that she had to pay a 58k water bill to BUECI. Discussion held regarding metering each apartment or dividing bill between the number of apartments. Someone objected that her bill should be lower because she lives along and another apartment has nine family members living in it.  So the decision was made to meter each apartment and then it would become painfully obvious who should conserve the water a bit and save a few bucks.

March 8.  House dream.  Part of the house was richly furnished and there was a collection of plastic items.  The basement was cluttered.  There was a collection of gift bags. (Strange I have gift bags on the apartment walls.) I have a mixed message about my mixed brain.  Wake up!

I also dreamt of my dad.  He has a bad hip and can't keep up with a crowd  So he was given a small conveyance to ride in and it was the shape of an elephant, the door opened on the side and away he rolled. It was very cute.

March 9, Tim got his Alaska driver's license in one try! He scored 100%.  I missed the question about 55mph something or other. So the licenses are good for five years and then automatically renewed.  Yay!!!  Now we are licensed to drive but no car. However we will be able to rent cars in Anchorage.

Talked to Mom the other day.  Dad had carpal tunnel surgery.  He has taken to wearing sweat pants whilst his hand heals.  He is also using Mom's fanny pack in lieu of pockets.

There is talk of marriage on the Jackpot portion of our visit.  I am not perfectly sure that there is any such service available there.  They only have casinos, a school and housing and a store or two and a gas station or two oh and a runway for light planes.

Interesting conversation:  I was relief telephone operator the other day and took an interesting call.
"May I have your name please?"
"Michelle _______"
"The computer does not show that name. Let's try date of birth"
"00-00-00"
"Um the only that comes up is Robert ________"
"Oh that is me, I am going for a name change."
"OK, let me put your other name under Also Known As, so we will be able to
locate your name next time."
"OK, thank you".
I would love to see the doctor's face when his patient shows up.  I heard second hand that he wore pearls and dressed in purple.

3-13 get up early 6 am to do laundry on Sundays.  So tired of smelling other peoples dirty socks.  Ugh.  Only advantage is that I can use four washers if I need to and all four dryers if I wanna.  But I keep it down to two each.

St. Patricks Day:  Tim has been hired by NSB to work in the optometry dept located in the Public Health Building, right next door to me.  We will be able to have lunch together.
It is official Judy is retiring in July.  We talked about hiring me but we both agreed that I did not want to be in management.  I would rather be number two, more comfortable that way, don't have to wrestle with budget etc.  She will recruit and hope to get someone with 648 experience.  We shall see. If we don't have someone by September she will return in September for the Joint Commission Survey.

Price shocker of the week.  I just noticed that the price of a gallon of milk actually DROPPED from $6.56 to $5.49.  Ack!!

On the most recent Messenger Index there was a notice under "50 years ago today" notice that Ralph Berglund was home from a relocation camp in Arizona.  Dad told us that the camp was a German POW camp.  He was a mechanic there.
We have a consultant from area here reviewing all sorts of stuff.  She was concerned about security. I was able to demonstrate some stuff of which she was unaware and left happy or at least impressed and I figured out exactly what kind of report she required.  We win!!!

Most shocking late excuse EVER. Patrick Pendleton was late to work today because his roommates fiancĂ©, a man of age 62 suddenly dropped dead in the apartment of a massive coronary.  I completed as much of the death certificate as possible as some information was just incomplete.

One of my more difficult birth certificates involved a young woman who could not make up her mind about a name for her baby.  I told her I only had seven days before I had to turn it in to the Court House.  She dithered for two weeks and then submitted a name to Juneau. She was pissed that the hospital did not have a baby name book.  Well that is a good idea but jeez.

Enough birth and death!! G'night folks.
