BUSH DIARY SEPTEMBER 1993

BUSH DIARY SEPTEMBER 1993:

Monday Labor day 9-6-93 also my Birthday.  Very lazy day, did not do much.

9-8-93:  Spent the day at home with thundering sore throat. Took Alka-Seltzer

Plus and it works wonderful, even knocked out the sore throat. Got to stay home and listen to the all the bulldozers and dump trucks tearing down the Utiladore.

Update on electrical problem:  We have had the maintenance supervisor and the electrician in several times.  Something is either wired up incorrectly or cross wired or some damn thing. The problem has been narrowed down to the feed between the apartment main meter to the outside feed. At which point it becomes BUECI's problem. Uh riighht.  So the lights may or may not come on.

Wednesday 9-15-93:  Whew 48 degrees, sunshine, light breezes, very nice day in Barrow.  The sunshine was paralyzingly bright.  I walked the time sheets over to the bookkeeper and a couple of birth certificates to the court house and nearly achieved heat stroke wearing my parka.

Our very different lady doctor has departed for the lower 48 to spread the gospel that she is all Save the Elephants and a vegetarian. However, she also boycotted the purchase of any walrus ivory and they are not endangered.  Big and delicious (shudder) but not endangered.  I'm sure she would have fainted if she had ever seen a walrus penis bone called oosick.  They are highly prized and highly carved upon.  And truly impressive if someone waves one in your face.

I am large and in charge as Judy and husband are spending the time in Anchorage going fishing!  You can have my share of salmon I prefer halibut steak, grilled with lemon.  Thanks.

Big summer storm blew in and knocked out power for several hours.  The one small advantage the Barrow has is that there are no trees to knock down power lines, the wind whips them apart quite nicely thank you very much.  As I rode the bus home today the wind blew down a line that lay across the bus and the road.  The driver called it in and we sat there until BUECI came and gave us the go ahead to drive away.  Insulation is a good thing.

The waves and surf was way up.  The Borough send a bulldozer to shut the outflow from the lagoon as the lagoon did not to be any higher.

Interesting phone call.  The lab manager told about a client who called up wanting his dog tested for diabetes.  Um, how come?  Well the dog was lethargic and the Vet said give the dog cookies and the dog is still lethargic and the man thought his dog might be diabetic.  The lab guy told him that they did not test dogs.  The guy said that he sure could because the dog is a beneficiary and should be tested. Lab guy told him no and the native gentleman said he would file a complaint.  Yes, sir that is entirely up to you, thank you for calling.

Price shocker:  I picked up a few groceries and was shocked at the total of 65 bucks.  I blinked and said that I only have five items, the total cannot possibly be that high. Oh let me check.  Yep, the ricotta was rung up wrong at 34 dollars.  That's some ricotta!!

It snowed so much yesterday that the airport shut down, nothing in, nothing out.  No milk, no mail, no messing around.

No ice yet, open water for three months.  The high surf churned up the bottom of deep sea clams and sea worms.    One rare blue one had the NARL biology folk all uber excited...EXCITED I say.  The worm is known commonly as a "Toe worm".  Cuz toes get blue when they are cold.  The scientists even sent for samples from Finland to check if their critter was a new kind of worm.  Ahh the higher sciences.

Gee September was fun.  Must take care of sunburn...not.  G'night folks.
