BUSH DIARY APRIL 1994:
Interesting entertainment. Dreamt we were out to dinner and it was someone's birthday. The group with this guy sang a rather pitiful Happy Birthday. He then stood up, took out his trumpet and played a spritely version of Happy B day. Apparently I am celebrating?
4-15: Tim and I both get refunds from Unca Sam this year. We do not pay income tax in Alaska. Thank you very much!!
Tim is getting stir crazy and decided to go on vacation four weeks early and booked everything, then later changed his mind he didn't want to be alone that long. Awwww. He did order a soft sided pet carrier and upgraded Bradford to ride onboard first class. My own travel preparations consist of ordering several plant watering devices courtesy of one of the MANY mail order catalogs. The watering thingies consist of a small porous pottery well which is inserted in the dirt and attacked by tube to a one quart plastic water holder and from which the water is siphoned. This creates a small scale drip irrigation system. I look forward to plants that are not dead. Additionally I am traveling light and plan to shop for workshop attending clothing. Yay!!!
Computer update. After a week of telephone tag, Marie Caruso fixed the system so that I can leave a tape in the drive and type a command on the screen and data base backup is up to date while the system is running, no more complete 90 minute shutdown. Progress!!! No more Friday night backup, or scrabble (sniff).
Rave reviews: Monica has been busy whittling away at our yearly performance evaluations. I got outstanding!!! Last year, middling. Monica gave me a 5 in one category. I cautioned her that the Borough usually wanted proof for such a high rating. I think she is just happy that I show up everyday. (Evil smile)
Talked to Mom the other day, they traded off her car for a snazzy red three year old used Plymouth van.
First week of April. ASRC handed out checks to each and every native in the amount of 2500 dollars. If you are a married couple with ten kids...you do the math. This was a payout authorized by the shareholders from a fund to which an oil settlement lawsuit had been invested. As a result of this largesse, Tim and I have only been impacted by a two hour wait for our hamburgers to be delivered from Arctic Pizza. The waitress said it was the worst day she had seen in six years of working there. Everyone who could, left town even if it was only to Fairbanks.
MaryJo Santos took off to Anchorage without a word. We heard later that her husband took her to Anchorage. They left their dog tied up with a couple bones. PSO came to the hospital looking for them asking about pet care.
As a result of all this it has been very slow at the Clinic. There were only 10to15 walk-in's this week. Soon as everything has been spent and folks return, visits will increase. The clinic actually serves as a social outlet as much as a lobby for patients waiting to be seen. Same for the post office. Huge crowds there.
4-19-95: What a day! Woke up the news on CNN and CBS about the bombing in Oklahoma City. I am somewhat relieved that the culprit did not turn out to be Islamic fundamentalists. One or own. I am impressed with how well law enforcement nabbed the guy.
BANKRUPTCY!! Markair announced that they are leaving Barrow and will be based in Denver. They will no longer fly to Alaska after Monday. They are down to six jets and four were repossessed by General ELectric. Kinda hard to fly without 'em.
We got tickets from Alaska Air. Phew.
Rumor: Carolyn McClintock announced that ASNA has secured waivers from Native Village of Barrow and all the village corporations in North Slope Borough. Now they can go ahead with the 638 contract. We will have the option of remaining Borough employees for one year. I will opt for that because by the end of that time I will be fully vested in the Thrift Plan and will be eligible for matching funds.
Computer stuff. Medical staff threw a fit and demanded that we get the Scheduling package up and running. I have been avoiding it but once I got into the guts of the thing and finally got it set up, it looked fairly easy. Going to train the Pharmacist so he can schedule patients for pharmacy visits. He is a computer whiz and can build cables, bless his techie heart. I worked on telecommunication stuff with boards and telephone consult from a lady in Oklahoma. Got it all properly installed.
Monica heard from the husband. He has joined an emotional support group.
Saturday 4-22 Game Day. A bunch of us met in the commons to play board games. It was a blast. Tim stayed home because there was not a ping pong table.
Got a postcard from Maryann Hosier. She is back in Idaho. Her son has applied for a position with PSO. She would like to go back to Kodiak in spring.
4-24: Weather got up to 36 degrees. Had all four windows open to help cool off the apartment. We are down to dirt roads. The remaining snow is a very attractive sand color. The snowmobiles are headed out to break trail to open water. The first whale will probably be taken soon. The ladies are work were discussing pickled muktuk recipes. Ah spring!!
4-27: Last minute computer problem. The drug file corrupted during global compression and area has been trying for two days to clean it up. Pharmacy has been less than pleased to dispense scrips the old fashioned way, type writer labels and all. Got a late fix this afternoon, hope all hangs together during vacation.
Leaving 4-29: Will document all of that in the next post.
Going on Vaca soon. G'night folks.

Everyone in town who decided to purchase the five Markair tickets with Permanent Dividend Fund have been screwed. As soon as the new was announced everyone in town holding tickets descended enmasse. They are handing out vouchers in exchange for the full unused set of tickets. The voucher holders will join the list of Markair creditors and will more than likely get paid dead last if at all. Apparently Markair Express is going to maintain the rural routes to the villages.
Jinky's Mom was stranded in San Jose. They wouldn't let her come home Thursday. She had to purchase an Alaska Airlines ticket 700 bucks one way.
