BUSH DIARY OCTOBER 1993:
A 32 foot whale was struck by the Nungasuk crew. This in open water, almost too choppy to hunt. With such open water we may witness the fairly rare phenomenon of ice freezing from the shore outwards.
October 11: Columbus Day is a holiday that is NOT celebrated in Alaska because 1: He never got to Alaska and 2: He was not Inupiat.
Anchorage was okey dokey. We flew down Sunday, shopped Monday. Tim got the flu Tuesday and Wednesday and we changed plans and came back early. The trip back was odd because we rebooked and wound up on different airlines: I flew out on Alaska and Tim was on MarkAir. By the time we got to Fairbanks nearly simultaneously and we deplaned because there was a problem and Alaska cancelled the flight. We wound up rebooking on MarkAir and we stopped in Prudhoe Bay to get back on schedule. I had never been inside that terminal. It is about the same as in Barrow only lots of burly men in parka's, the testosterone level was up there.
We landed, hailed a cab, picked up the mail and got home to be greeted by Bradford. We did get to witness one of the MarkAir skip loaders drop some freight. Somebody's beer spewed all over the tarmac along with the OJ.
Still no ice, as we landed I could see nothing for 50 miles out.
The Mayoral race was held while we were in Anchorage. George Ahmaogak won.
The non-profit arm of ASRC (ASNA) is determining whether or not to take over management of the hospital. It would be a 638 contract and Barrow and the area office in Anchorage are the only facilities that are not 638. This will put more money under local management rather than someone spending money for us in Washington.
Bought a couple of books: Two Old Women, a book about the Gwichen who abandon two old women as the whole camp is starving. They are left with some bundles of caribou sinew and everyone leaves. After sitting around for a couple of days, one of the ladies remembers where a good camp for winter is and they decide to walk there. They manage to get there and trap game and establish shelters and eventually the rest of the group catches up with them and they are reunited. It was a cracking good story based on fairly accurate facts. It is in reprint now.
I bought another Tony Hillerman book called Sacred Clowns. I always learn some neat cultural fact from these books. I learned that Abraham Lincoln sent canes to foreign governments and sent a cane to the Hopi. The cane was stolen and Jim Chee and Joe Leaphorn had to solve the mystery. Good stuff!!!
"The Client" by John Gresham. This was later made into a movie and it was pretty good. I have to tell a story on my sister, Carla. She loves to tell stories but sometimes the details come out a bit different. We were discussing The Client and she was telling me that she really liked The Seagull Papers. Uh...did you mean The Pelican Brief? Yeah!!
I qualified for Permanent Fund check this year in the amount of $949.00 for each and every citizen of Alaska, man, woman and child. Some families rake in a pretty good annual bonus. All of the airlines are offering three round trip tickets for the price of $949.00. I will examine my purchasing options, it's a good bargain.
10-15-93: For meds for anemia, (I shoulda just started taking IRON!) Pharmacy is no longer filling non native prescriptions so those of us who are not native have to get scrips filled in Anchorage, meh.
Still no ice but did ride past some fresh cut ice sitting next to an ice cellar, must have cut in inland and hauled it to Barrow.
Three whales were killed this week, plus a large gray whale washed up on shore. Gray whales are not on the Inupiaq menu. They prefer Bowhead whales mostly due to size, Gray's are much bigger than Bowhead.
A fox tested positive for Rabies so it is open season on Foxes. Anyone leaving Barrow with their pets must have Vet certification that they have been inoculated.
10-18/22-93 Columbus Day and Sewards Day. The hospital was the one to observe Columbus Day and Sewards Day. Yay!
Tuesday our phantom electrical problem recurred, Totem electric came over and found a burned wire down below near the main box and so far things are working. When the kitchen circuit cuts out so does the computer.
Had to redo my trip report to make sure that all the i's were crossed and the t's were dotted? Got that done.
Bus Trip: As I got off the bus at the corner I slid and bumped down the stairs. The bus driver asked if I was okay and I grunted and got up and slipped and slid to work.
10-24: Happy Birthday Charlie. One time I celebrated his birthday twice in one year. It was a crazy busy summer. I obsessed so much at work about squeezing in a celebration for Charlie that a lovely woman baked a coconut cake shaped like a lamb and wrapped a present for him. I got home and grabbed him and my roommates two kids and we went out to Pizza. It didn't dawn on me for a couple of weeks until October 1 rolled around that we had had birthday pizza in September. Okay.
I made veggie quiche for Tim. He likes veggie very much. That and the fact that I cook at all.
Halloween came and went and I had plans to disperse loose change rather than candy. When that runs out the notice of "No more candy" goes up on the door.
Nighty, night.
